Privacy Policy — Tidy Pantry

Tidy Pantry is built by Halley Software. We believe a pantry app shouldn't need your data to work. This policy explains exactly what happens with the information you enter, take pictures of, or scan.

The short version

• Everything you add to Tidy Pantry — items, photos, locations, grocery lists — lives on your device.
• If you enable iCloud sync (Premium), your data is synced between your own devices through Apple's iCloud. Halley Software cannot read it.
• When you scan a barcode, only the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts (a non-profit open database) to look up the product. Nothing that identifies you is sent.
• We don't run analytics. We don't show ads. We don't use trackers. We don't require accounts. We never sell or share your data.

What the app does with your data

Pantry items, grocery lists, and settings

Stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. If you subscribe to Premium and enable sync, the same data is stored in your private iCloud container via Apple's CloudKit. Halley Software does not have access to your iCloud container — Apple does not grant developers visibility into private user data stored this way.

Photos

When you attach a photo to an item, it's stored on your device (and in your iCloud container if sync is enabled). Photos never leave Apple's platforms.

Camera

The camera is used only for barcode scanning. Images are processed in real time on your device to detect barcodes; no images are sent anywhere and none are stored. You'll be asked for camera permission the first time you use the scanner. You can revoke it at any time in iOS Settings.

Photo library

If you add a photo from your library, iOS asks your permission to share only the specific photos you pick. You can revoke this permission in iOS Settings.

Barcode lookups

When you scan a recognized barcode, the app sends the barcode number to Open Food Facts (https://world.openfoodfacts.org), a non-profit collaborative product database, over HTTPS. The request includes the barcode number and a generic User-Agent identifying Tidy Pantry. It does not include your name, email, Apple ID, device ID, or any other identifier. Open Food Facts may log the IP address of the incoming request in their server logs per their own privacy policy (https://world.openfoodfacts.org/privacy). We have no control over Open Food Facts.

Notifications

Expiration reminders are scheduled locally by iOS using Apple's UserNotifications framework. No notification tokens are sent to Halley Software; no push server is involved. Reminders are computed on-device based on your items' expiration dates.

Subscriptions

If you subscribe to Tidy Pantry Pro, the purchase is handled by Apple's StoreKit. Halley Software receives a signed receipt from Apple indicating your subscription status. We do not see your name, email, Apple ID, payment method, or any other financial information. Apple's privacy policy governs your App Store purchase: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy

What we do not do

• We do not collect analytics or usage data.
• We do not use third-party trackers, advertising SDKs, or crash reporting services.
• We do not show ads.
• We do not require you to create an account.
• We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.

Your rights

Since we don't collect personal data from the app, there isn't much stored data to request, correct, or delete. Under laws like GDPR (EU), UK GDPR, and CCPA (California), you generally have the right to:

• Know what personal data a business holds about you
• Request access to or deletion of that data
• Opt out of the sale of personal data (we do not sell personal data)

Children's privacy

Tidy Pantry is a general-audience utility. We do not knowingly collect any data from children under 13. If a child has entered information into the app, you can simply delete the app — there is no server-side record to remove.

This policy covers the Tidy Pantry app. The Halley Software website (halleysoftware.com) has its own privacy practices — see halleysoftware.com/privacy.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and post a notice in the app and on this page. Continuing to use Tidy Pantry after an update means you accept the updated policy.
